Instructor Khadijah Simon is a dynamic jazz pianist and educator who excels at helping students unlock their full potential through one-on-one and group instruction.

Aside from her contagious enthusiasm for jazz, she is also known for a philosophical and “straight-to-the-point” teaching style that gives students quick results regardless of skill level.

Khadijah crafts each lesson to meet your specific needs, and ensures that you learn in a way that caters to your specific learning style.

Program Categories and Requirements

When you sign up, you will be placed in one of three categories based on your skill level.

These categories are: A, B, and C.

Category A Prerequisites:

  • Basic Piano Knowledge (Understanding of the keyboard layout, finger placement, and ability to play simple melodies.)
  • Basic Music Theory Knowledge: Familiarity with basic concepts such as notes names, values and rhythms.
  • An interest in Jazz: You must have a desire to learn jazz, and understand that it takes commitment and consistency to improve. (Applies to all levels!)

Category B Prerequisites:

  • Basic Piano Proficiency: Ability to play scales with both hands, and a basic understanding of triads and 7th chords.
  • Foundational Music Theory: Knowledge of major and minor scales, basic chord progressions and voicings.
  • Introductory Jazz Skills: Familiarity with jazz rhythms, the ability to play basic jazz chords and their inversions, and an understanding of simple jazz forms like the 12-bar blues.

Category C Prerequisites:

  • Good Piano Technique: Comfortable with playing solo piano arrangements, good hands-together coordination and independence
  • Jazz Theory Knowledge: Basic understanding of more complex scales (diminished, modes, chord extensions, and jazz harmony.
  • Jazz Proficiency: Ability to play common jazz standards, improvise simple solos, and understand various jazz styles and forms.
  • Performance Experience: Some experience playing in a group or solo setting, with a focus on further developing improvisation, voicing, and comping skills.

FAQ

A: The one on one program is $100 US per month. You will get one class per week for the entire month.

A: Each lesson is an hour (60 minutes).

A: No. All you need is a notebook, a pen or pencil, good internet connection and a camera positioned to show your hands.

A: No, but a basic knowledge of the notes of the staff and note/rest values is a plus.

A: Lessons will take place on Mondays and Saturdays. When signing up, you can pick the day and time that is suitable for you.

A: This program lasts throughout the entire year with only two month-long breaks (In August and December) that are optional.

Note: We must be reminded at least a month in advance if you are taking one or both of the breaks.

A: Yes, there are graded activities once every 2 months to track your progress.
